Why is God bad at marketing?
Reading some of your answers, one thing I have discovered about religion (and perhaps Christianity in particular) is that it is very personal. This means that everyone has different opinions and interpretations of almost everything. There are very few people who believe exactly the same thing. I realise that these differences are only skin deep, and the underlying beliefs (the basic beliefs we discussed in my previous posts) are the same, but it still makes you think. The fact that there are so many interpretations shows one thing: Christianity and the messages of the Bible are ambiguous. So why doesn't God make things clearer for us?
Please do not jump to the obvious response – ‘what right do you have to question the way God works’? I have been told this before, but I remain unconvinced by those who say that but cannot provide an answer to my questions. It is human nature to question beliefs and knowledge, and I belive that it is very important to do so.
I have always assumed that God wants us to believe in Him. Indeed if He loves all of mankind, then he should want as many people as possible to believe. If this is the case, why does He do such a terrible job at promoting Himself? Those of you who believe and find your belief unquestionable, have you never wondered why so many people aren’t believers? There are about 4.5 billion non-believers. Assuming that Christianity is ‘the one true religion’, why are so many people missing out on it? Here are the reasons I can think of:
- Education about Christianity is not wide spread enough
- It is easier to find God (or think that you have) through other religions
- God only reveals himself to certain people
- Christianity is difficult to believe in, and those with a sceptical mind don’t think that there is enough evidence for it
- The Devil has corrupted 4.5 billion people so that they will go to hell (through reason 2?)
- 4.5 billion human minds are too corrupted to believe
In reasons 1 through 5, I have to think that God isn’t doing a very good job of getting people to believe in Him (assuming He wants us too). Being God, shouldn’t he be able to solve these problems without completely revealing Himself? He should be able to do it without us even noticing a difference. As for those of you who liked reason 6, isn’t it a sin to think that you are superior to 4.5 billion other human minds?
To compound this marketing problem, God also fills the world with ‘tests of faith’, which have been prominent throughout human history as we make discoveries. The whole ‘test of faith’ thing doesn’t make sense to me, and I have only ever heard it when a believer is unable to provide an explanation for something that goes against their beliefs. All I have said is with the assumption that God wants as many humans as possible to believe in Him. So I ask you these two questions:
- Does God want us to believe in Him?
- Why is He so bad at getting people to believe (yes, 2.1 billion people is a lot, but it also means two thirds of humans will burn in hell)?

The central message of the gospel--that salvation is obtained through faith in Jesus, the Son of God--is plenty clear. It was encapsulated in the Rule of Faith in the early church and formalized in creeds very early. Other doctrines such as that of the creation of the world by God, the fall of mankind, the Holy Spirit as third person of the Trinity, the church as the "called out" body of Christ, the judgment of God to come and others were clearly understood early as well. We shouldn't let the lack of complete clarity regarding more peripheral matters to lead us to think there is little agreement on core doctrines.

George, you'll find my answer to your question here.

Hola George,
Stimulating questions.
1) Why does God do a bad job of marketing Himself?
Don't forget that the number one bestselling book of all time is the Bible. Thousands of books have been published that were inspired by or commentaries of the Bible. Could He be more clear? Certainly, but not without consequences. If His glory didn't blind us or vaporize us, we would be obligated to believe in Him. The Bible is unique in showing a God who doesn't want His people to feel forced to love Him, as slaves would.
2) The different interpretations. I have read all of the responses and I don't see any tremendous gulfs between the Christian writers who have answered you. However, organized religion while serving the useful purpose of fellowship, has often had a corrupting influence on Christian worldviews. Many liberal church denominations (Ex: PCUSA and ECUSA) have jettisoned the Bible in favor of postmodernism and are hemorrhaging members as a result (supporting abortion, preaching a materialistic messiah, and being pro-homosexual et al). Conservative churches like PCA or the Catholic Church are following a traditionally cultural corruption of the gospels (no women pastors, forced celebacy, pagan rituals, etc.). If you want to find biblical interpretations that are categorically opposed to each other, read what the denominations believe in. However, the honest seeker will consistently favor the gospel.
It's important to note here that the "church" as the Bible describes it is the body of Christ not exclusively those folks who get their paycheck from a church.
3) Why is He so bad at getting people to believe (yes, 2.1 billion people is a lot, but it also means two thirds of humans will burn in hell)?
You want the truth? Dunno. Nothing would make me angrier in my pre-Christian days then to think that two-thirds would be condemned. It seemed so unfair, but who are we trusting in, God, or our own interpretation?
The invitation to know God through Jesus is clear. Christ is not just some guy who liked wearing robes 2,000 years ago and we'll all burn in Hell if we don't do a break dance for Him. He is throughout the Old and New Testaments the very essence of God, the very essence of uncorrupted intelligence itself. Without Him we are mere amoebas.
Two writings on Hell that are very helpful are Meister Eckhart's sermon on love and C.S. Lewis' "The Great Divorce".
Last, I would point out that God's revelation to each of us is progressive. The more we walk in faith (applying what we learn, praying regularly, reading the Bible daily) the more aha! moments we'll have.
Gotta go now, but I'd like you to address some of the specific statements. Amanda has written a great piece and anonymous makes several solid points et al.
Good luck on your quest.

There is something consistent in the atheist's opinions about God. There is hardly ever any introspection. It is always either the Bible or God at fault or partially in error. But what if the atheist position and opinion simply illustrates the truths in the Bible regarding the extreme pride and arrogancy of the human heart in opposition to the Creator.
God is not bad at marketing. Not many are interested in what God has to offer. Even though God desires that everyone would accept the gift of eternal life through real, active faith in Christ, the truth is that not everyone is going to heaven or be granted the gift of immortality because not everyone will sincerely choose to use their mind to understand God.
The Lord desires quantity but He would rather have quality than quantity. Eight beautiful self-sacrificing, self-controlled characters is better than eight billion selfish, self-destructive individuals.
What if the Bible is correct and we are so thoroughly depraved and selfish that our thought processes are corrupted ? What if we are so thoroughly proud and arrogant that a radical change must be effected in our character before we can appreciate God ? Then, there would always be a tendency to see a distorted picture of God instead of placing the most favorable construction on His motives and actions.
In that case, we would have to humble ourselves and actually ask God himself to help us understand the Bible. Imagine that...
Oh ! By the way, God isn't going to burn anyone in hell for eternity if they don't believe in Him or worship Him. If you believe that, then you really don't know your Bible very well. The Scriptures teach...

Christian,
I thought the Bible said that ....."whoever believes in Him, will not perish, but have eternal life" (john 3:16)
Doesn't that mean that whoever doesn't believe will perish?
I admire everything I've read from you so far, but I was wondering about this one.
